MGP Randomly Starts Cycling Connection

Recently, both of my iPads have started cycling their MGP connections. They randomly start disconnecting and re-connecting. This behavior may last for up to an hour or just a few minutes.

I have been unable to pinpoint what is causing this. Restarting MGP or Metaserver, powering down the iPads or restarting the computer have no effect.

The only thing that seems to clearly trigger this is working with hidden preview files for NI instruments or using an audio app called WavePad. Running ARK with Loopback causes MGP to absolutely freak out.

I have attached a log screenshot and it clearly shows some sort of USB connection/conflict issue is happening. What causes this I have no idea, but it renders MGP unusable while it’s happening.

This is a new behavior and has started occurring since updating to MGP 1.6.9/Metaserver 5.2.2.

MGP 1.6.9/Metaserver 5.2.2
Intel MacPro 28-core, Sequoia 15.5, RAM 512GB, all storage PCIe, audio driver Avid MTRXII/Thunderbolt. Both iPads are 2019 iPad Pros running iOS 18.5

Thanks for the report. We will be examining this week.

Further info on this. The issue only occurs when using more than one iPad. There seems to be some sort of struggle going on between my two iPads in accessing whatever port(s) they use to communicate with the desktop. I’ve also noticed that when the connection cycling occurs, one of my iPads will continuously drop out of and reappear in the “Locations” area of my sidebar.

I have been able to mitigate the problem by disconnecting one of the iPads from the computer and forcing it to use Wi-fi while the other uses a USB connection. This scenario is stable.

Last, I’ve been closely monitoring this issue in Activity Monitor and Console and I can’t determine anything that’s consistently happening in concert with the iPads starting to connection-cycle. From a user standpoint, it’s totally random.

We have really hard duplicating this on our test system and the logs don’t reveal much. We will release the new version of MetaServer for Windows - we have done some optimization - let’s see then.

Update: This issue was getting worse and reinstalls weren’t helping, so I hunted down and deleted every speck of MetaServer’s existence on my computer, restarted and reinstalled. Everything now works PERFECTLY. It’s snappy and responsive and rock solid.

I’ve found that a lot of apps and utilities that require you to simply drop a new version in the Applications folder leave behind breadcrumbs that can cause problems over time. It’s happened enough where it’s a known troubleshooting item for me. It might be a good idea to create a thorough uninstaller for MetaServer or a how-to page that shows how to completely remove it from your machine before attempting to troubleshoot or reinstall in a problematic situation.

Thanks!

I’ve had this problem since 5.1.5 and I can’t solve it. I started Windows in safe mode with nothing else running and other startup drivers disabled. But I still can’t use metaserver and 2 ipads without frequent disconnections.
Can you spell out what steps you went through? What exactly did you delete. I’m not sure I can face restructuring all the generic remotes I have for Cubase.. Surely though this is a metaserver problem in windows, as it shouldn’t matter what grids you have employed.

I haven’t used MetaServer on a Windows machine, so I can’t speak to a solution directly, but on a Mac it involved manually removing various Privacy & Security settings and three different folders in the User Library. I used repeated searches with different queries to find everything. The goal was to get the machine to a point where it was as if MetaServer had never been installed on it.

We are working hard on dual-iPad disconnection issue - it is on the top of our priority list.

Glad to hear this. I have this issue on Mac… but happens only when the mac is performing an offline Bounce to Disk in Logic Pro or Pro Tools, or something similar. Sometimes only 1 or the other iPad will lose connections, sometimes both. Sometimes it will refind the connection on its own, sometimes i’ll have to hit Refresh 1 or more times before it will relocate its connection.

Revo Uninstaller is a great bit of free software for hunting down all the garbage left behind after uninstalling programs.
