can’t get MetaGrid to connect through USB (and wifi is not working great either making it even more of a problem). Sometimes USB stays greyed out, other times its available but I get a “connection Failed”
Tried to see what is happening in the log, but when I click USB and get the “connection failed” nothing happens in the log?
Ipad is connected and charging via USB.

We are waiting for Apple to approve MetaGrid 1.7.1 Beta 1 with additional fixes. I will let you know asap when it is available so you can download it from the TestFlight. We have identified the issues you are experiencing based on the logs you have provided. In the meantime please download the MetaServer 6.0.1 Beta 2 build - it should help as well:
