How to Control a Cubase Parameter with a Fader (Bi-Directional) Using MetaGrid Pro

Looking to control a Cubase parameter with a fader in MetaGrid Pro? Here’s how to do it step by step — let’s take controlling the Click Level as an example:

Step 1: Setting Up a Generic Remote in Cubase

  1. Open Cubase and navigate to Studio > Studio Setup….

  2. Find and select the Generic Remote file for metasystem3.xml or create a new Generic Remote setup if you prefer to use a dedicated configuration for your custom controllers. Make sure it sends and receives MIDI on the MetaServer - MIDI port.

  3. Click Add to create a new item in the list.

  4. In the Top Panel:

• Name your control in the Control Name field (e.g., “Click Level”).

• Set the MIDI Channel (for this example, MIDI Channel 10) and Address (e.g., CC60).

• Ensure the Flags are set to Receive (R) and Transmit (T). This ensures bi-directional communication.

Tip: Use a unique name for the Control Name field — otherwise, it might not save properly.

  1. In the Bottom Panel:

• Select Metronome in the Device column.

• Choose Device in the Channel/Category column.

• Select clickLevel as the Value/Action.

  1. Click Apply to save your changes and export the Generic Remote control file for backup and future reference.

Step 2: Configuring a Fader in MetaGrid Pro

  1. Open MetaGrid Pro and create a new fader.

  2. Customize the fader’s appearance and properties as you see fit.

  3. Set the corresponding MIDI parameters — ensure the MIDI CC channel and CC value match what you configured in Cubase (in this case, MIDI Channel 10 and CC60).

  4. Exit edit mode.

Your fader in MetaGrid Pro should now control the Click Level in Cubase seamlessly!

This setup offers a powerful way to control Cubase parameters with real-time, bi-directional feedback through MetaGrid Pro. If you have any questions or run into issues, feel free to ask for help in the comments! Happy creating!

Is this behaviour also possible in Logic? :sunglasses:

It is not that easy in Logic Pro - we are currently investigating some options with Rinus - the creator of Plugsearch. Let’s hope we will be be able to create a great solution for this.
