Free text addresses for custom MIDI Remote scripts

I use my own Cubase MIDI Remote script next to yours. It sends the names and values of plug-in parameters to MetaGrid Pro, using the same SysEx message as your Selected Channel script (F0 7D cubase@<address>|<text> F7), and I show them in buttons titled @qc1, @fqc1, and so on. It works very well.

The limit: MetaGrid only displays the addresses it already knows (@qc1-8, @fqc1-8, @send1-8, @insert1-8, @selectedTrack…). An unknown address such as @nx1 is ignored. I need about 21 texts on one grid, so I would have to borrow @send5 to @send8, which overwrites the real send names on my channel grid.

Request: a set of free addresses, for example @user1 to @user32, displayed in a button, label or fader title exactly like @qc1, but never written by your own scripts.

Two related questions:

  1. Is this text mechanism specific to the Cubase integration, or is there a general form that any program can use?
  2. Is the macro triggered when a grid or scene appears still planned for 1.7? It would let my script know which grid is on screen.

Thanks for the great app!

Hi Vinc,

Thanks for explaining your setup. We’ve added 32 dedicated custom text slots, @user1 through @user32, to the plan for MetaGrid Pro 1.7.8.

These will use the existing Cubase SysEx message format—for example, cubase@user1|Cutoff—with @user1 in an object’s title. Our built-in scripts won’t write to these slots, so you won’t need to borrow send or Quick Control addresses. Separate custom scripts will still need to coordinate which slots they use.

For MetaGrid Pro 2.0, we’ve also planned optional On Open and On Close macros for each grid. You could use an On Open macro to notify your script which grid is active and have it send the corresponding text values.

We still need to verify the custom-slot forwarding on both Mac and Windows MetaServer. These are planned changes; they aren’t available in the current release.
