Adding Tracks in Cubase with MetaGrid Pro’s Menu Buttons
Three button types. Three ways to work. Same lightning-fast workflow ![]()
When building a track-creation workflow in Cubase, MetaGrid Pro gives you three distinct menu button behaviors to choose from. Each button type changes how you access your list of track types—so you can tailor the grid to match exactly how you prefer to work.
Below are the three menu button types used in the example from the screenshot.
Each icon represents a different interaction model:
• Dot · ■ Square ▲ Triangle
Let’s walk through them using the Add Track menu as the example. ![]()
Dot — Standard Mode
Cubase_Add_Track_Menu_Button_Standard.mbutton (24.4 KB)
Tap to open the track list → Choose the track type you want → Done.
This is the simplest and most predictable interaction:
-
Tap the button → the full list of track types appears
-
Select Audio, MIDI, Instrument, FX Channel, etc.
-
The action fires immediately
There is no primary action tied to a single tap—this mode is ideal when you switch between track types frequently.
Perfect for:
Browsing track types
General-purpose “Add Track” menus
Users who don’t want tap behavior to change
Square — Menu on Long Press
Cubase_Add_Track_Menu_Button_Menu_On_Long_Press.mbutton (24.4 KB)
Tap = Instantly add your primary track type
Long press = Open the menu
This mode is designed for speed.
For example, if you always add MIDI tracks by default:
-
Tap → instantly adds a MIDI track
-
Long press → opens the track list for when you occasionally need Audio, Instrument, or FX tracks
Your primary action never changes unless you edit the button.
Perfect for:
Fast, repetitive creation of one main track type
Users who want speed but still need menu access
Clean, predictable workflow
Triangle — Dynamic Mode
Cubase_Add_Track_Menu_Button_Dynamic.mbutton (24.4 KB)
Long press = Choose a track type
Tap = Adds the last selected track type
This is the most flexible mode—and fantastic for session work where your priorities shift.
Example:
-
Long press → choose Audio Mono → it executes and becomes your new tap action
-
Tap → now instantly adds Audio Mono
-
Later, long press → pick Instrument → tap now adds Instrument by default
The button automatically adapts to the last track type you used.
Perfect for:
Composers switching between track types on the fly
Users who want a “smart” primary action
Rapid workflows with evolving needs
Which one should you choose?
Use Standard when you browse.
Use Menu on Long Press when you repeat.
Use Dynamic when you adapt.
Or mix all three—MetaGrid Pro is built for your way of working.
