MGP Feedback - Running List

Hey everyone,

I keep a running list of things I come across in MGP that appear inconsistent or might work better with a little tweak, or maybe even a feature idea. Most of it is pretty granular, but I keep track of it anyway. If I list something that’s already in play, please correct me. I try to stay up to date on the latest MGP version, but still miss things. Feel free to add your own! This is just meant to be a groupthink. (I’m on a Mac, BTW)

Things I Keep Bumping Into:
• Being able to create User Style Presets, especially for users who do deep-dive design in their grids.
• Solid colors for backgrounds or User backgrounds. I think this might be underway already.
• The ‘Selected Color’ border in the palette menus is very hard to see amongst all of the color chips. A little wider or more obvious would be helpful.
• Adding a double-click command in the macro-builder. I’ve found that different apps respond differently to two single-click commands in a row. It’s inconsistent and I have to futz with pauses.
• A repeat command functionality in the macro builder for macros where a key command or something else has to be done multiple times in a row instead of duplicating the single command over and over.
• Adding the ability to disable a step instead of deleting it in the macro builder would be SUPER helpful for debugging.
• Being able to change views from Date/Time to Alphabetical in asset lists. Depending on what the assets are, one view or the other is more useful. Searching isn’t always a solution because I can’t remember what I named things sometimes and going by date makes it hard to group assets in a logical way if you’re not accessing the assets within a short period of time.
• A little more flexibility in sizing icons. Some need to contain more visual info than others and as a result, the total icon is either too squished or takes over the whole button.
• Not being able to change the text size of a fader title really limits what you can do with it visually.

Inconsistencies:
• When changing a button layout, type formatting changes along with it. If you’ve custom-formatted text, it gets kicked out.
• Some of the Delete Grid dialog boxes don’t contain the name of the grid being deleted. I think that’s a data point that should remain consistent if you’re deciding to delete something.
• There’s no way to close a menu button without choosing something in the menu. I’ve added a blank “Close” macro at the bottom to get around this, but otherwise you’re stuck if you want to cancel out of the menu.
• When you choose a macro like a Cubase function or Keyboard Maestro, the menu opens up in a way that obscures the name of the macro you’ve made that you’re choosing it for. I know it doesn’t seem like a big deal, but if you’re doing a bunch of them it’s very easy to lose track of which is which if you can’t reference the name of your own macro.
• Return To Previous Grid breaks if any changes or editing is done on the grid that you’re returning from.
• 2-step gradient for faders shows as start and middle colors, not start and end.
• 2- and 3-step gradients other than vertical are locked out for faders.
• Show Cap Border Only and Hide Cap Text don’t copy/paste to other faders when doing style copy.

Bugs?
• If you delete an active profile, MGP crashes. I’ve tried it at least twenty times and it happens every time. If you delete one other than the active one, it works fine.
• When using CAPS LOCK on a bluetooth keyboard to enter text on an iPad, the Tab Key stops working. I don’t know if this is an iOS thing or an MGP thing.
• MGP does not recall a chosen Text Background Color in the palettes. This might be why copying buttons using this option don’t retain the color choice when copied to another grid.
• When adding an Activate Application macro to a Menu Button, that macro automatically becomes the default setting for the button, deleting all other macros and changing the title of the button.
• I still get locked out all the time when I’m trying to move buttons or elements from one place to another. I can’t pin it down to any one thing. Seems totally random. The only way to resolve it for sure is to put a dummy element of the same kind in the space where I’m moving items to. Could it be related to using small spacing/padding on grids?

My Own Self-Serving Wishlist:
• Some bulk commands in Content Manager would help a lot, like Export All Buttons or Export All Grids. Assigning a generic delineator for the upload would be fine. I can go in the iCloud folder and do a quick rename of everything to dial it in. The important thing is speeding up the upload process itself. Last time I did a full button upload to make sure everything was current it took over 8 hours because of having to repeat the same process over and over.
• A default upload location should be a preference. Having to choose where something is going every time when 99% of it is going to the same place seems like overkill, which leads me to…
• I still firmly believe there’s no need to manually confirm an upload every time. I don’t use a single other app that requires this. They only pop an alert when something goes wrong. Between eliminating this and making the upload a preference, that’s eliminating two steps from the process, which is significant.
• I think a control for how to split or merge cells would be cool in that if you’re splitting or merging a block of cells, you can pre-determine the size of the cells instead of always starting from the smallest size or merging specific sizes one by one.

That’s it for now! There aren’t any work-stoppers in here, which is pretty darn impressive. While my iPads still occasionally disconnect for unknown reasons, they recover every time. I’ve also been able to tie some occurrences to things happening in other apps.

Here’s my list.

A few minor gripes:

  • After exporting/importing Grids, all Snapshots are erroneously indicating that the allocated space is too small. So I have to copy those Grids across Workspaces instead.

  • When creating a Text macro entry, the iPad’s pop-up keyboard covers the text that is being typed.

  • There’s still a bug here in 1.6.19 where highlighting a Workspace (not activating it) in the CM results in that Workspace being fully activated.

  • After my iPad wakes up, MGP fails to un dim 4 out of 10 times.

  • This has been addressed but… MGP seems to wreak havoc on Cubase’s MIDI ports, and consequently, its MIDI Remotes. MGP’s Incoming MIDI breaks 100% of the time after launching Cubase, which requires a restart of Metaserver and then MGP.

  • Transparency should be named Opacity - it is currently the wrong way around.

I would like to see:

  • Progress bar when uploading to Google Drive. Currently it hangs on the ‘Continue’ screen.

  • Activate Workspaces via macro.

  • Button Preview when selecting icons.

  • The ability to copy one macro entry across to another button’s macro. Like the current swipe/copy, but across buttons. Sometimes I want to simply/quickly add functionality to a button.

  • One tap to select ALL Text attributes in Style Settings. Very often I need to copy all text attributes except the text itself across to another button. This requires 7 taps - one ‘Clear All’ and 6 checks. It could be:

  1. ‘Clear All’
  2. Check all text attributes
  3. Uncheck ‘Text’
  • Opacity settings for XY Pads and Snapshots.

Great list! The one macro entry copy/paste issue is one I forgot! Two votes for that!

Thanks both — this is exactly the kind of consolidated feedback that’s most useful. Quick triage pass below, then a note on how I’m going to track this going forward.

Confirmed bugs — moving to dedicated threads for tracking:

  • Active profile delete crash
  • Workspace activating on highlight (1.6.19)
  • Activate Application macro overwriting Menu Button
  • Snapshot allocation warning after Grid export/import
  • Return To Previous Grid breaking after edits

Already possible or implemented in the current beta

  • Solid color backgrounds —you can already do this by selecting Hi-Tech Textures - last background (filled rectangle) and assign any color. However, we will think how to make it more obvious - today that’s rather a workaround.
  • Element move/drag lock-out — already fixed in the upcoming release
  • Un-dim failure after iPad wake - already fixed in the upcoming release.
  • Cubase MIDI port disruption — already fixed in the upcoming release

Already in progress or planned for 1.8:

  • Fader gradient labels (start/middle → start/end) and non-vertical gradient lock — on the list
  • CAPS LOCK + Bluetooth → Tab key (suspect iOS-side, will check)

Feature requests I’m grouping into a “Macro Builder 2.0” epic - planned for v1.8:

  • Disable (vs. delete) macro steps
  • Repeat command
  • Double-click command
  • Copy single macro entry across buttons (noted McDub’s second)
  • Better macro picker layout so your own button name stays visible

Going to spin this out as its own thread for discussion.

Other features I’m tracking with high interest:

  • One-tap select-all Text attributes in Style Settings
  • Default upload location as a preference + removing the per-upload confirm
  • Bulk Content Manager export
  • Activate Workspaces via macro
  • User Style Presets
  • Asset list sort toggle
  • Google Drive upload progress

Going forward: I’m going to keep this thread as the running feedback list — keep posting here, it’s the easiest place to dump observations. For confirmed bugs and feature requests with traction, I’ll spin off dedicated threads (linked back here) so we can track status and you can vote/discuss without losing things in a long list. A pinned roadmap/known-issues post is coming too.

@McDub that’s not what we experience on our test systems - you can tap outside the menu to dismiss the menu without triggering. Can you please check?

We can’t replicate this apart from the button text change - we will fix it for menu buttons and multi-step macros. Can you please specify the repro steps?

You’re right! I don’t know why I never noticed this before. I was so focused on the menu itself and reticent to touch anything outside of it. My inclination was to tap the menu title bar to close it again.

I’ve been working a lot with faders and other visual elements lately. Three things would be useful:

  1. The ability to insert a PNG or icon into a label field so the designated space could just be a static picture or designed visual element. I do this with buttons now, but it would be better if the area was completely static. It provides the ability to add really interesting, personalized design elements to a grid that you can’t make with the in-app tools. Sort of a branding thing, even. A resize tool would be cool for this, too. Just a simple slider for +/- magnification.
  2. Add a Close All button at the top of the element editor. When a bunch of fields are open for different buttons, the menu starts hopping around from button to button and it gets disorienting. Sometimes the best way to re-orient where everything is at is to just close them all and re-open only what you need rather than scrolling around constantly.
  3. This one’s trickier, but something to consider down the road. Fader throw calibration would be really helpful based on what you’re assigning the fader to. Some MIDI controls are detented in chunks, like choosing locked delay values or tuning by semitones, others are extremely precise like tuning by cents or moving start/stop times for granular loops. Being able to adjust the throw (even just Coarse, Medium, Fine) would make a big difference in the controls feeling like they’re responding correctly to what they’re controlling.

Just double tap any section header to expand / collapse all (or currently expanded).

Yes, this will be available in 1.8 for the new mod control object that will replace the fader.

On our to do list - v1.8

I’m using a lot of more of unusual MGP functions today!

• I’ve found that if I copy a label into a merged cell larger than the label I’m copying the label doesn’t expand to fit, rather the cell collapses around it and the remaining space becomes “blank” - as in you can’t see any cells. You can’t highlight that area for editing anymore. The only way to break it up is to either merge the blanked out space one cell at a time with something else or merge it with two cells bookending it. Then I can go back and split it again.
• Snapshot rows are invisible in the desktop app. They show up as black boxes in Edit Mode and in normal mode they disappear completely. This is only in the desktop app.
• The XY controller count needs to be set to one more than you want to get the correct number. For example, if you want six controllers, you have to set the number of controllers to 7.
• Re-order macros only shows the first 10 menu items even if 11-13 are filled.

If you need screenshots or videos of any of this stuff, I’m happy to make them. I’ll try the menu button reset thing again when I’m done working.

That is fixed in the upcoming build.

More info needed on this - I can’t replicate this by just adding as a snapshot object in MetaGrid Pro on Mac.

Confirmed in some scenarios - will be fixed.

About the snapshots. Now I’m getting a sizing warning in the desktop app every time even though the iPad grid is fine. See below. I also can’t get the desktop app and my iPad to sync to matter what I do. The best I’ve been able to achieve is a transfer icon popping up on the desktop app for about half a second and then it disappears.

I’ve found some other nitpicky stuff:

• Icon search results for the same term are ordered differently on successive searches. This gets pretty confusing when there are a lot of results. Search for something like “Dot” or “Power” or “Square” and you’ll see what I mean.
• Being able to use Command-F on a bluetooth keyboard to start an icon search would be great. It works when adding macro steps and it definitely speeds things up. Hitting the magnifying glass icon so it launches a search can get a bit frustrating because you have to tap it just so. Other action icons are much more forgiving.
• On a Latching Switch, being able to copy everything EXCEPT the macro between states would be great. If you make design changes to the button later on you can’t copy them without replacing the macro, which might have a completely different setup in each state
• Snapshot group assignments nested in the XY controller decrement by one after they’re saved. 1,2,3 becomes 2,1,None or setting one of them to 1 becomes -1, etc.
• This one is a little random, but happens constantly. When editing a grid, if you set the Secondary Action to display another grid, that change will not stick unless you exit out of Edit Mode and go back in after each change. If you edit another button or go to another grid while still in Edit Mode the original Secondary Action change undoes itself upon exiting Edit Mode.

OK - this needs to be investigated.

OK, needs investigation

Makes sense - added to the list.

That one should be already fixed in the 1.7.

A couple more things came up last night when I was building new grids:

  1. I have been unable to upload (every time) or download (most of the time) custom color palettes from iCloud or Google Drive. This isn’t a 1.7/6.1.0 thing. It’s been going on for a bit. It doesn’t matter which OS I’m using between Tahoe or Sequoia. Dropbox works for uploads, but not downloads. I haven’t had this issue up/downloading any other elements or assets. It’s just color palettes.
  2. Something strange is going on with my older grids that have snapshots in them. Anything I’ve created on my main system (iPad Pro M4, Sequoia 15.7.7, MGP 1.6.19-1.7, Metaserver 6.0.1-6.1.0) where a snapshot appears as normal opens as “Not enough space to display this snapshot…” on Intel iPad Pros. Every time. If I create a snapshot on the Intel iPad Pro and move it to the M4 iPad Pro, it works fine. Not sure if it’s an iOS sizing discrepancy between the two platforms or something else. Can’t figure it out.

I’ve figured out more about this. What happens is that when the working grid is uploaded to iCloud or is synced, the orientation of the snapshot flips from vertical to horizontal, which generates the warning. However, upon fixing the orientation the snapshot completely disappears in MGP desktop. Here are couple snapshots The first is my iPad - everything looks fine. The second is MGP desktop after fixing the snapshot orientation. You can see that the snapshot box is invisible. It’s there when I go into Edit mode, but it’s just a black box.

I’m still having big issues with two things:

• Buttons getting locked out when trying to move them. It happens less often, but still quite a bit.
• The list of my local apps in both the Activate action and the Icon Selector is usually incomplete. Restarting MGP usually fixes it, but sometimes I have to reboot my computer along with MGP to get the full list to show up. In addition to this, if I’ve assigned a macro to a specific app, it won’t work if the app doesn’t show up in that list.
